Using Autofill to Enter Data in Microsoft Excel

If you have repetitive data, such as a series of numbers or an identifiable pattern, you can use Excel's autofill feature to finish the typing for you!  Here's how:

  1. Enter only enough data into the cells until the pattern becomes apparent
  2. Highlight the cells.
  3. Notice the tiny square on the bottom-right border of your highlighted cells.  Left-click and drag the highlighted section by this square.
  4. Release the left mouse button at the spot where you would like to end the autofill.  Your autofill will work something like the examples in the table below:

    Cells Highlighted With...

    Excel Autofills Cells With...

    3, 4, 5, etc.

    2, 4

    6, 8, 10, etc.

    C, D, etc.

    Monday, Tuesday

    Wednesday, Thursday, etc.
