Thunderbird POP New User Installation

Step 1: Download & Install Thunderbird.

  1. Go to http://www.mozilla.com
  2. Scroll to the large Thunderbird link and click it.
  3. On the next page, click the Free Download link.
  4. The download should begin.  (You may be prompted for a save location.)  If not, click the click here link.
  5. When the download is complete, check your save location (Desktop, Downloads, etc.) for a Thunderbird Setup .exe file.  Click on it and select Run to begin the Mozilla Thunderbird Setup wizard.
  6. On the first screen of the Mozilla Thunderbird Setup wizard, click Don’t Import Anything.
  7. On the next screen, Enter your name, email address and password.  Click Continue.
  8. In the incoming mail section enter
    1. Email.psu.edu
    2. POP
    3. 995
    4. SSL/TLS
  9. In the outgoing mail section enter
    1. Authsmtp.psu.edu
    2. 587
    3. StartTTLS
  10. Click on Manual Setup
  11. Click onuserid@psu.edu
    1. Change the Account Name to PSU POP
    2. Click OK

Step 2: Set up your Thunderbird Address Books.

  1. Click the Address Book button.
  2. Choose File→New→LDAP Directory...
  3. When the Directory Server Properties dialog opens, enter the following:
    1. Name: UL Directory
    2. Hostname: ldap.libraries.psu.edu
    3. BaseDN: ou=people,dc=psu,dc=edu
    4. Port number: 389
  4. Click OK to close the add directory window.
  5. Choose File→New→LDAP Directory...
  6. When the Directory Server Properties dialog opens, enter the following:
    1. Name: PSU Directory
    2. Hostname: ldap.psu.edu
    3. BaseDN: dc=psu,dc=edu
    4. Port number: 389
  7. Click OK to close the add directory window.
  8. Close the Address Book Window

Step 3: Configure your Thunderbird Account Settings.

  1. Go to ToolsAccount Settings
  2. Click your account's Server Settings.  (You may need to expand the account by clicking the plus sign or arrow beside your account name.)
    1. Server Type: POP Mail Server
    2. Server Name: email.psu.edu
    3. Port: 995
    4. Username:userid
    5. Connection Security: SSL/TLS
    6. Authentication Method: Leave blank
    7. Check for new messages at Startup: Check
    8. Check for Messages every 10 Minutes: Check
    9. Automatically Download Messages: Check
    10. Leave Messages on Server: Uncheck
    11. Empty Trash on Exit: Check
  3. Click on Copies and Folders
    1. Select PSU POP for all settings
  4. Click on Composition and Addressing
    1. Automatically quote the original message when replying: Check
    2. Then,: start my replay above the quote
    3.  Compose Messages in HTML: Check
    4. When looking up addresses: Use a different LDAP server – select UL Directory
  5. Click on Junk Settings
    1. Enable Adaptive junk controls for this account: Check
    2. Do not mark mail as junk if the sender is in: Personal Address Book and Collected Addresses
    3. Move junk Messages to: Check (Then select your Junk folder. From the drop-down.)
    4. Automatically Delete Junk Mail Older than 14 Days: Check
  6. Click on Outgoing Server (SMTP).  You will have a list of one or more outgoing servers, with one marked as "(Default)".
    1. Description:  PSU
    2. Servername: authsmtp.psu.educ.   
    3. Port: 587 (this may different at some campuses check with your local IT)
    4. Authentication Method: Normal Password
    5. Username:[userid]
  7. Click OK.
  8. Click OK.

Step 4: Finalize Your Thunderbird Account Settings.

  1. Go to Tools Options…  The Options dialog box appears.
    1. Click Composition.  Click the Addressing tab. 
      1. Check Local Address Books. 
      2. Check Directory Server, and select the UL Directory. 
      3. Check Automatically add outgoing e-mail addresses to Collected Addresses.
    2. Click Security.
      1. Click Junk. Check When I mark messages as junk and select Move them to the account’s junk folder.
      2. Click Antivirus.  Check Allow anti-virus clients to quarantine individual messages.
  2. Click OK.
  3. Send a message with the subject "Did you get this?" to yourself to check your email settings.  If you do not get it back within 20 minutes, contact I-Tech for help.

Step 5: Notes on using Thunderbird.

  1. Remember to “junk” messages that are truly junk and to delete messages that you no longer need. 
  2. Go to your Junk folder daily for the first 2 weeks and “unjunk” messages that do not belong there.  You will get false positives for a few weeks as you “train” Thunderbird on what you consider Junk.
