Thunderbird Add-Ons and Updates

You can add more functionality to your Thunderbird email client by getting Add-ons.  If you've ever used add Add-ons in Firefox, these work the same way.

Finding and/or Installing New Add-ons

  1. Go to Tools→Add-ons.  The Add-ons window will appear.
  2. Click the Get Extensions link.  A browser window will open to the Add-ons for Thunderbird page.
  3. Browse or search for Add-ons.
  4. For each Add-on you select:
    1. Click the link to download it.
    2. In Thunderbird's Add-ons window, click the Install... button.
    3. Navigate to the Add-on and click Open.
    4. When the button finishes counting down, click Install Now.
  5. When you are finished installing Add-ons in Thunderbird's Add-ons window, click the Restart Thunderbird button.  Thunderbird will restart with your new Add-on.

Setting Add-on Preferences

You can set preferences for a particular Add-on as well:

  1. Go to Tools→Add-ons.  The Add-ons window will appear.
  2. Select the Add-on you wish to adjust.  Three buttons will appear: Preferences, Disable, and Uninstall.
  3. Click the Preferences button.  A new window or dialog will appear for the Add-on.
  4. Make adjustments to the settings for your Add-on. Then close the window/dialog when complete.

Getting Rid of Unwanted Add-ons

Sometimes installing too many Add-ons means sacrificing performance.  Other times, you decide you liked how your application worked before you installed a particular Add-on.  Either way, it's good to know how to temporarily disable or permanently uninstall your Add-ons if you decide you no longer want them:

  1. Go to Tools→Add-ons.  The Add-ons window will appear.
  2. Select the Add-on you wish to remove.  Three buttons will appear: Preferences, Disable, and Uninstall:
    • If you would like to temporarily disable the Add-on, click the Disable button.  (The Add-on will be turned off, but you can turn it back on again by clicking the Enable button which has taken the Disable button's place.)
    • If you would like to permanently uninstall the Add-on, click the Uninstall button.  (The Add-on will be completely removed from the list.  You would have to find and reinstall the Add-on to get it back.)
