Postscript (PS) and PCL

What is the different between Postscript (PS) and PCL? Which one should you be using? In most cases either will do, but the table below will serve as a guide:

 

Postscript (PS)

PCL

History/Purpose

Historically used frequently on Mac platforms. Common printing language for many manuafacturers; page prints consistently regarless of printer.

Developed originally for HP Laser printers for quick, efficient print jobs where consistent results from printer to printer was not necessary. Now available on many printers.

When to Use It

  • You want your printing to be consistent with a print copy from another device.
  • You have graphics that you want to print in the best quality possible.
  • You have a text-only document.
  • You want to print a document quickly.
