Create Shortcuts

What is a Shortcut?

A shortcut is a link to a specific application or file.

The shortcut icon can be placed anywhere and enables quick access to a program or file no matter where it is stored. It does require the user to know the location of the original software application or file to be launched.


Creating a File or Application Shortcut

You can create a shortcut from an application already listed in your Start menu, or by using the Create Shortcut



Creating a Shortcut from an Application on Your Start Menu

  1. Click Start→Programs and find the application for which you'd like to create a shortcut.
  2. Right-click on icon for the application, and then left-click the Create Shortcut menu option.
  3. A second entry for application appears under the first one.
  4. Hold down the left mouse button and drag the second shortcut to the Desktop, to a location on your Start menu, the Quick Launch bar, etc.


Creating a Shortcut Using the Create Shortcut Dialog

  1. Right-click the desktop and select New>Shortcut.
  2. On the menu that follows, left-click the Shortcut choice.
  3. When the Create Shortcut dialog appears click the Browse... button.
  4. Browse to C:\Program Files, and locate the application for which you are creating a shortcut.
  5. Click on the .exe file and click the OK button.
  6. In the Create Shortcut dialog, click the Next > button.
  7. Edit the name for the shortcut if you like, and then click the Finish button.


Create a Shortcut to a Web Resource

  1. Open your browser to the Web page or Web application that you want.
  2. Resize your browser so you can see both your computer's desktop and the browser window at the same time.
  3. Click and hold the icon that appears at the left edge of the URL address bar.
  4. While holding the left mouse button down, move your cursor pointer to the desktop-notice that the icon appear to move with the cursor-then release the mouse button. VoilĂ ! The shortcut will be created.


Deleting a Shortcut

  1. Right-click on the shortcut.
  2. Left-click on Delete.

Note: The shortcut is sent to the Recycle Bin. It will remain there until you empty the it.
