Employee Selection:An effective selection process will enable you to efficiently select the right employees, in the right numbers, in a timely manner.  The selection process is likely to be different for the managers and other hourly workers?

Assignment

Design the hourly employee selection process.  What method(s) will you use at each step?

Develop a list of questions for a structured interview of applicants for the supervisor’s position.

  1. TEAM 3 SUBMISSION - ASSIGNMENT 7:

    EMPLOYEE SELECTION PROCESS:

    Recruit Individuals Regularly - Work with the local university and newspapers to conduct a job fair to locate fun, friendly, upbeat students. We will also accept online applications through our website
    Attain Employee Applications - All prospective employee applications will be entered online. The application will include personal information such as name, address, and telephone number, educational experience, and work experience.
    Preliminary Screening - A brief phone interview will be conducted and a decision will be made if the employee will continue in the selection process. This will clearly eliminate unqualified job applicants and eliminate wasting time and efforts.
    Resume Review - Prospective employee resumes are to be uploaded with their application and will be reviewed after the candidate progresses through the preliminary interview.

    One on One Employee Interviews - Candidates will be asked a set of predetermined behavioral based questions and their responses will be gauged as to their fit in the Max community.

    Alternate Skills Test - Performed on applicants being considered for the cooking positions to ensure they can deliver a quality product that meets our restaurant's standards.

    Alternate Role Play Exercise – Performed with applicants considered for any and all customer service positions to ensure prospective employee’s ability to handle diverse situations and clientele appropriately.

    Background and Reference checks - Employees that are deemed a good fit for the Max family based on the previous steps will have their provided information validated by background and reference checks. Employment, criminal, and credit history will be a focus.

    Selection - Future MAX employees that best exemplify our company's principles and objectives will be extended employment offers.

    PRELIMINARY PHONE INTERVIEW: (Aim not to exceed 10 minutes and applicable to all prospective employees)

    • What peaked your interest in the position?
    • Are you familiar with MAX’s Restaurant and philosophy?
    • What applicable attributes or past experience do you have?
    • Are you currently employed, if so are you leaving your other job and why?
    • What responsibilities have you had at your previous employer?
    • Are you interested in long term employment? What is your availability (How many hours are you available and/or expect to be scheduled per week/month).

    HOURLY, NON-SUPERVISORY EMPLOYEES: (Aim not to exceed 45 minutes/1hour if possible with all prospective employees)

    • What peaked your interest in the position?
    • Are you familiar with MAX’s Restaurant and philosophy?
    • What applicable attributes or past experience do you have? Have you worked in the foodservice industry before? If yes, which positions did you work? Which was your favorite position and why?
    • What do you feel is your greatest strength? Weakness?
    • Can you provide an example of how you handled a difficult situation and what you did to make it a success? 
    • How will you ensure that both workers and customers have a great feeling about Max's when going home?
    • Are you currently employed? If so, why are you leaving this position?
    • What did you like about your last job? Dislike? What did your enjoy?
    • In three words, how would you describe yourself? How would others?
    • ADDITIONAL OPTION – Employment Skills Test. Cooks Position applicable for preparation/food service.
    • ADDITIONAL OPTION – Role Play Exercise – All front labor employees for verification of customer service skills and ability to handle complex situations professionally.
    • What is your prior salary history? What is the pay rate that you are looking for?
    • How soon would you be available to start working?
    • Do you have any questions regarding the position, the responsibilities, or the company?

    SUPERVISORY EMPLOYEES INTERVIEW QUESTIONS:  (Aim not to exceed 45 minutes/1hour during intial interview. Second Interview aim not to exceed 45 minutes/1hour).

    • Briefly describe your professional experience. Have you ever worked in the food service industry?  Which position(s) did you perform? Which did you enjoy and why?
    • What specific attributes or past experiences do you feel could contribute to this position?
    • What do you feel is your greatest strength? Weakness?
    • Can you provide an example of how you handled a difficult situation and what you did to make it a success? 
    • How will you ensure that both workers and customers have a great feeling about Max's when going home?
    • Are you currently employed? If so, why are you leaving this position?
    • What did you like about your last job? Dislike? What did your enjoy?
    • In three words, how would you describe yourself? How would others?
    • What type of supervisory style do you utilize?
    • How would you typically deal with a stressful situation that may arise because of a customer's statements or actions?
    • How would you handle disagreements between co-workers working in different areas of responsibility? Provide an example of how you handled the situation and took the lead to satisfy both parties, and obtain a meeting of the minds, settling the dispute between clients and/or employees.
    • Assume you are in a situation where a customer has just returned his second order because he was unhappy with the meal (which was prepared exactly as the customer ordered) and they were becoming belligerent. How would you diffuse the situation? What techniques would you use?
    • What is your prior salary history? What is the pay rate that you are looking for?
    • How soon would you be available to start working?
    • Do you have any questions regarding the position, the responsibilities, or the company?
