The Project Sponsor serves as the main link between the Project Team and the organization's leadership. An effective Sponsor "owns" the project and has the ultimate responsibility for seeing that the intended benefits are realized. Although the Sponsor does not participate in day-to-day project activities, he or she does support the Project Manager in getting the necessary organizational support needed to make strategic decisions and lead a successful project.

The Sponsor

  • Serves as advocate for the project in discussions across the institution 
  • Provides overall support for project activities and priorities 
  • Delivers communications to University communities 
  • Advises on project scope and deliverables 
  • Provides staff resources and support throughout the project 
  • Serves as decision point on issues escalated by the Project Team 
  • Reviews project scope change requests for approval
