  • Lawn tennis goes intercollegiate in 1911 and Team caption David Lloyd paces Penn State first varsity tennis team to

        a 6-1-1 season

        o  Penn State’s first tennis coach William Ham guided the Lions to a 15-21-1 record from 1923-27.* In 1935, Dot Anderson

            made history as Penn State’s first female player

  • Coach Harvey Stover’s squad posted a 6-2 record in 1935 playing Eastern rivals such a s Pitt, Navy,

        Syracuse, and Cornell

  • In the 1960s Coach Holmes Cathrall’s road trips exposed teams to the nation’s best
  • Holmes Cathrall coached the Nittany Lions to a 280-197-2 mark and four ECAC titles from 1965- 90
  • Sophomore Mario Obando led the Lions to their first ever wins over Army and Navy in 1966 as Penn State

        posted a 9-3 record

  • Coach Holmes Cathrall’s teams won four Eastern titles in the 1970s
  • In 1974, number one single player Jan Bortner won the Eastern singles title

         o  With doubles partner Migual Maurtua, Bortner advanced further in the NCAA tournament

  • Jan  Bortner had an intense rivalry with Maryland star John Lucas, Bortner qualified for the NCAA championships

        four times from 1972-1975

  • Coach Jan Bortner guided Lion women to seven Atlantic 10 titles and a 125-45 record from 1982-89 before

        he became head coach of the men’s team

  • Coach Bortner’s teams finished atop the Atlantic 10 eight of nine years from 1983-91
  • Southpaw Virgil Christian lunges for a cross-court forehand, 1983

          o  Christian teamed with Jeff Factor to form Penn State’s top doubles team in 1983, compiling an 18-8 record

  • Lee Sponaugle qualified for the NCAA championships in singles in 1986, and in doubles in 1985 and 1986
  • In the 1990s, Jan Bortner coached Penn State from the Atlantic 10 to the Big Ten

         o  Bortner led singles standouts Ivan Spinner and Michael Carter to earn first team All-Big Ten honors while qualifying for

             NCAA championshipso  Spinner, the 1995 NCAA Region I Player of the  Year, also made it to the NCAAs in doubles with

             partner Greg Gaunt

          o  Ivan Spinner earned All-Big Ten honors three times from 1993-95 and qualified for the NCAAs in singles in 1994 and

             1995, and in doubles in 1994

  • Sarni Tennis Center grew out of the old chicken coops that were once a part of Penn State’s school of Agriculture

         o  The Tennis Center opened in 1999, enabling Penn State to host major championships

             In 2001 and 2002, Jamie Gersh was named first team All-Big Ten and qualified for the NCAA championships and in

            2005 Mark Barry did it too

  • Classroom leader- Adam Slagter, who was named to the 2007 Academic All-Big Ten list, went 19-11 during

         the 2006-07 season

  • In 1965, a women varsity team was formed by Coach Ann Valentine
  • Women’s tennis hits the courts under Coach Ann Valentine and Pat Seni steps in a year later and coaches Lion

        women to an 11-3 record from 1966-68

  • Carol Daniels winds up for the baseline forehand and she won the 1981 singles title as the Lion women captured

         the Middle States crown

  • Lion women won eight Atlantic 10 crowns from 1983 to 1991 under coaches Jan Bortner and Sue Whiteside

         o  Claudia Karabedian and Kelly Erven compiled a 20-2 match record and won their second straight ECAC championships

            in 1990-clamied the East’s No. 1 rankingo   Karabedian and Erven won two ECAC titles on the way to NCAA

            championship competitiono  In Sue Whiteside’s first season, Penn State went 12-2 and claimed their eighth Atlantic 10

            title in nine seasons

         o   Singles standouts Olga Novikova, Pilar Montgomery, and Ali Barnett led Lion women against Big Ten rivals- Novikova

              earned All-Big Ten honors from 1995-1997 and made three trips to the NCAAs

  • Sophomore Pilar Montgomery became the second Lion Woman who earn All-Big Ten honors as a single player

        1998 and again in 2001

  • Coach Buffy Baker led the Lions to defeat Michigan State, 7-0, in 2000
Last Season(2010)
  • Supervisor senior: Brendon Lynch won 17 victories including 9 at the first singles spot and finished career with 79

        victories, ranks 9th on Penn State’s all-time list

  • Academic Leader: Leyla Murzan had a team-high 17 wins in 2008 and 2009 including 3 victories in Big Ten

        conference play. She served as a Student-Athlete Advisory Board(SAAB) secretary

  • Team Leader: Guillaume St-Maurice registered a team best 18 wins in 2008 and 2009 including 7 wins in matches

        against ranked teams 13-9 record in dual matches 16 doubles wins with partner Brendon Lynch.

  • Junior Winner: Lauren McCarthy had 12 singles wins including 3 victories against Big Ten opponents and 14 victories

        in 2008 and 2009. She also had 2 singles wins against #64 Minnesota and #Iowa last season
