          o  All-American- Sophomore outfielder Danielle Kinley earned second team All-American honors to become jus the

                                  third Penn State player to garner the prestigious honor in program history

          o  Double Hitter-Junior Jen Acunto broke the school all-time doubles record with a two-bagger against Ohio State

                                  during the 2007 Big Ten Tournament. The ninth of the season, it was the 39th of her career, eclipsing

                                  Megan Humphrey’s previous record of 38

           o  Key contributor- Junior utility player Ashley Esperza earned All-Big Ten honors again and was integral in

                                       another run to the NCAA Regionals for Robin Petrini’s squad* In 1965, Coach Pat McTarsney’s Lion

                                       softballers go 2-2, grabbing their first two wins by trouncing Elizabethtown, 26-1, and stomping

                                       Wilson, 20-3

  • McTarsney’s team climb steadily and challenge for Eastern titles in the 1970s

         o  The Lion softballers had a 83-68-1 record from 1965-1972 and 1974-80

         o  McTarsney’s team made Penn State’s first trip to the Eastern AIAW Regional championships

  • The breakthrough year came in 1974 as Gayle Stravisky pitched the team to a 10-1 record

         o  Janice Presel’s .78 E.R.A took the Nittany Lions to the Eastern regional playoffs in the following year and she won five of six

             outings in 1977 while batting .353

          o  In McTarsney’s last three seasons from 1978- 1980, the Lion softballers posted a 44-21 mark

  • Rayne Yori posted a career 1.32 E.R.A from 1979-82 while winning 25 games and she set a lion record in 1981 with a season

        E.R.A of just 0.79

  • Kathy Komara was one of four seniors on the 1982 team that placed third at the Eastern AIAW Regional championships
  • Mary Anne Cremo became the first Lion softballer to earn Academic All-American in 1983

         o  Shannon Salesburg ’96 and ’98 and Jen McIntyre ’97 followed her lead

  • In 1992, Penn State joined the Big Ten , one of the nation’s most competitive conferences
  • By 1999, the Nittany Lions reached the league’s championship tournament
  • From  1999 through 2005, Coach Robin Petrini’s team played in six Big Ten championship tournaments and earned five

        NCAA Regional tournament bids

  • Brenda Frey threw nine shutouts and won 14 games in 1983
  • Cathy Kaminski fanned 113 batters in 214 innings in 1989 and finished the season winning 20 out of 31 games with six shutouts

         o  Kaminski finished her career (1987-89)

  • Coach Robin Petrini’s team took a 37-17 record to the 2000 NCAA tournament, making their first appearance since 1985
  • Coach Sue Rankin’s teams established Atlantic 10 titles in 1983, 1985, and 1988 and the ’85 and ’88 teams set PSU

         records with 34 wins apiece

         o  Brenda Frey, Aileen Polanis, Beth Devlin, and Cathy Kaminski provided strong pitching, while Carol Fulz, Michelle Turk, Geri

             Saya, and Nan Sichler knocked the stuffing out of the ball

             -         Beth Devlin set a PSU record with a .54 E.R.A and her career E.R.A was a 1.15 from 1984-876

         o  Nan Sichler, Penn State’s most dominating player, twice helped teams to 34-win seasons-

              -         As a freshmen in 1985, she hit .360 and completed a rare triple play in a game against Liberty Baptist and as a senior,

                        she hit .413 and set career records for home runs (15), runs scored (115), runs batted in (118)

          o  Gery Saya was named Atlantic 10 Tournament MVP in 1985 as the 34-16 Lions won the Atlantic 10 Tournament

          o  Michelle Turk hit .386 in 1983 as the Lions reached their first NCAA Tournament and Turk’s .352 career batting average

              (1981-84) set a PSU record

  • Shannon Salsburg set Lion career marks by hitting 34 home runs and knocking in 118 runs from 1995- 98
  • The All-Region rightfielder Karen Gulini batted .405 with 60 hits and 27 stolen bases and she hit safely in 20 straight games
  • Pitcher Jaci Kalp struck out 109 hitters and notched 10 victorie sin 1998 and she was named the team’s Most Valuable Player

         and Best Defensive Player

  • Jaci Kalp finished her career in 1999 first all-time in career strikeouts (522) and wins (49)
  • Kelly McCann’s 22 wins in 2001 was a new record for victories in a season
  • In 2005, Missy Beseres set a single season record for strikeouts with 260
  • By the 2005 season, Penn State’s women had earned 34 All-Big Ten selections, including seven on the First Team
  • Outfielder Karen Gulini became Penn State’s first First Team All-American in 2000 and utility fielder Ashely Esparza

        garnered third team honors in 2005
