With my project I have looked at the site of the battle of marathon in Greece. The Greek army defended their homes against the Persian army, in knowing the terrain of their land they could use the topography to a military advantage. By using the sea to prevent a land reatreat and the hills on either side to attack from the high ground. The high ground gave them the tactical advantage in being able to see the entirety of the enemy's forces and bring into use their archers. By first making a mock charge a retraet they drew the Persians into the valley and then pulled in the flanks around them. This negated the Persian's calvary and larger numbers.
